Whilst on site at Warwick Hospital I met clinicians at the Cardiac Catheter Lab, which has undergone a total refurbishment. The lab needed a number of maintenance improvements and the radiology equipment was due an upgrade. To accommodate the new equipment and increase capacity within the department, the first phase of the development was to create an additional procedure room, which has enabled all cardiology clinical interventions to be in a single location. To ensure continuity of service, the extension was built whist the original Cath Lab continued to function. The new Cath Lab became operational in June 2023. The second phase of the project is a full refurbishment. This work commenced in June and it is due to be operational from mid December 2023.
Victoria Ward has also undergone a transformation. I was interested to visit the ward and to have an opportunity to meet with nursing staff. Victoria Ward cares for elderly patients with cognitive impairments such as delirium, dementia, or memory loss. These vulnerable patients can be in-patients for long periods of time. Staying in hospital can be challenging for anyone and a reduction in activities, mobility and mental stimulation can result in distress and a decline in wellbeing, particularly for frail patients.
