Local MP, Jeremy Wright visited Wellesbourne Airfield to listen to concerns raised about the possible planning application for a housing development at the site.
Accompanied by Cllr Anne Parry, Mr Wright spoke with Frankie Stuart and Duncan Mackillop who both fly and work at the old Second World War airfield. Jeremy learnt of the economic and local implications such a housing project would have on the immediate area.
As well as providing local employment, the private airfield is visited by an estimated 850,000 visitors a year. The facility generates a considerable amount of business, especially in the way of hangars for local flying enthusiasts, commercial flight training, and providing global businesses with a convenient place to fly to generate business in the West Midlands region.
Jeremy was taken on a tour of the site and the control tower, and spoke to those who work and learn at the airfield. Mr Wright said, “Wellesbourne Airfield has a great history and still plays a vital role to the community and to business. It would be a great pity to lose such a valuable facility from Warwickshire.”
